1. CONTEXT

Stream Basketball is an interactive Twitch chat overlay that transforms passive viewers into active community participants through a real-time, gamified basketball mini-game.

  • 1

Role: Solo Developer & UI/UX Designer

  • 2

    Timeline: 1 month.

  • 3

Core Responsibility: Designing and developing a seamless, chat-integrated interactive game to transform passive viewers into active community participants.

2. Context & Problem

  • 1

Context: Streaming platforms often suffer from a disconnect between the streamer and the audience. Passive viewing can lead to lower retention and weaker community bonds.

  • 2

The Problem: How can we bridge the gap between stream content and chat interaction, turning passive viewers into active participants without adding friction to the viewing experience?

3. Design Philosophy

  • 1

Frictionless Participation: Utilizing familiar chat commands (!shoot [angle] [power]) meant viewers didn't need to leave the platform or download external tools to play.

  • 2

Shared Context: Integrating the game as a stream overlay ensured that the game state was instantly visible to all, acting as a shared digital campfire.

  • 3

Community Rivalry: Leveraging gamification principles—specifically a real-time leaderboard—to foster friendly competition and organic community building.

4. The Core Solution: The Interactive Overlay & Leaderboard

  • 1

Actionable Solution: Developed a real-time basketball mini-game directly integrated with Twitch chat and designed to be captured via OBS.

  • 2

Why it Matters: Instead of passive text, viewers input commands that directly affect the on-screen gameplay. The stream and the chat become one unified experience.

  • 3

The Leaderboard Effect: The implementation of a persistent leaderboard was crucial. It provided an ongoing objective, sparking rivalries among chatters and giving them a reason to stay engaged and continuously interact throughout the broadcast.

5. Conclusion & Outcomes

  • 1

Outcome: Successfully created an interactive layer that enhances the core streaming experience by making the audience part of the on-screen action.

  • 2

Feedback: Based on live testing and streamer feedback, the game successfully converted passive lurkers into active chatters. One streamer noted, "Yo bro the overlay is sick please keep working on it, i got like 3 people taking it so seriously 😂". The constant competition for the top spot on the leaderboard made the community noticeably more engaged and interactive.
